I can honestly say that the subject they have the most solid grounding in is Math because of the constant drilling & repetition. You can't replace that, and my girls are now math whizzes! We only made them to do every other problem, and that worked for us! I hadn't even looked at Saxon, because I thought it looked incredibly boring (as you mentioned!) when my younger sister used it.
